Madrid en los años treinta. Ambiente social, político, cultural y religioso, Julio Montero – Javier Cervera Gil (p. 13-39).
Madrid in the 1930´s. Social, political, cultural and religious situation, Julio Montero – Javier Cervera Gil (p. 13-39).
The city of Madrid of the 1930’s which witnessed the first steps of Opus Dei was the backdrop for great change. Firstly from the political point of view: the Monarchy had been replaced by the Republic; also the city itself was converted into an urban setting for a new era. Intellectuals and cultural life together with the new political class and the Press stirred up a whirlwind which absorbed all of the city dwellers regardless of class or background sometimes in spite of themselves. The Civil War worsened these problems in a city which was at once a battle front and a rear guard.

Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer en los años treinta: los sacerdotes amigos, José Luis González Gullón – Jaume Aurell (p. 41-106).
Josemaría Escrivá in the 1930s: priest friends (p. 41-106).
On February 14, 1943, St. Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer saw a way of legally incorporating priests into Opus Dei, and the Priestly Society of the Holy Cross came into being. However, years before, during the Second Spanish Republic, he had launched a weekly meeting of priests explaining to them the spirit of Opus Dei, in order that they would identify with its supernatural and apostolic aims. In this study, the authors present a brief biography of the priests who participated in these meetings, and explain how the meetings began in February 1932, their evolution over three years and why they ended in early 1935 . The study is based on documents already published on Saint Josemaria together with unpublished material on the biographical details of the priests who associated with him during these years.

Luis Gordon Picardo. Un empresario en los primeros años del Opus Dei (1898–1932), Pedro Pablo Ortuñez Goicolea – Luis Gordon Beguer (p. 107-138).
Luis Gordon Picardo. Businessman (1898-1932), Pedro Pablo Ortuñez Goicolea – Luis Gordon Beguer (p. 107-138).
This article attempts to reconstruct the biography of one of the first members of Opus Dei. The intense normality and briefness of the protagonist’s life made many of the research phases difficult. However, the available information is enough to create a sketch of the character and personality of a faithful Christian, living in the trying political and economical situation of Spain during the first third of the twentieth century.

San Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer y la devoción al Amor Misericordioso (1927-1935), Federico M. Requena (p. 139-174).
St. Josemaría Escrivá and the devotion to the Merciful Love (1927-1935), (p. 139-174).
This study offers an introductory overview of Saint Josemaría Escrivá’s relationship with the Merciful Love, a devotion diffused in Spain during the 1920’s and 1930’s by the writings of the French nun of the Visitation Order, María Teresa Desandais. St. Josemaría’s relationship with the Merciful Love Movement is the story of a process which ran parallel to the beginnings of Opus Dei and to the development of two dimensions which were inseparable and of great importance in his spiritual life: divine filiation and spiritual childhood.

A Knowledge of Love. Theological Reflection on the Critical-Historical Edition of “The Way” (II) Guillaume Derville (p. 277-305).
Based on the critical-historical edition of “The Way”, the first part of this article endeavoured to get closer to the inspired and empathetic book of Saint Josemaria. The charismatic and existential origin of The Way was highlighted and a case was made for a Christological reading. In the second part, G. Derville mentions some theological contributions of Saint Josemaría with regard to the Mystery of Christ, such as: the paternal love of God and divine filiation, contemplation in the middle of the world and professional work, the secular dimension of the apostolate. Here we have a science of God which is that of the saints: The Wisdom of the Love.
