The critical-historical edition of “Christ is passing by” has been published

22 October 2013/in Complete Works, News /by isje

Christ is passing byThe critical-historical edition of Christ is passing by has just been published. The text was prepared by the theologian Antonio Aranda.  This is the fourth volume in the Collection of the Complete Works of St. Josemaría. The Historical Institute is promoting this series which is being published by Rialp. The book contains eighteen homilies by the founder of Opus Dei together with an extensive historical-theological commentary and copious textual analysis notes.

The foreword is written by the current Prelate of Opus Dei, Msgr. Javier Echevarría. This publication of more than one thousand pages also represents a detailed study of the spirituality and theological background of the preaching of St. Josemaría. More than one hundred introductory pages are dedicated to the reconstruction of the history surrounding St. Josemaria´s first book of homilies. The homilies are placed in context and new information is made available on the activity of St. Josemaría as a writer and a preacher. At the same time, each homily has its own historical-theological introduction.

Items relating to content and textual analysis are contained in the footnotes of the corresponding homilies. It is worth drawing attention to the notes dedicated to the establishment of the main lines of argument, scriptural connections, the main aspects of the spirituality and their significance for Christian thought.

The publication includes the original indices of the book and a series of appendices with editorial notes, information on the various editions as well as translations and other aspects in order to provide complete bibliographical information for Christ is passing by. Almost 500,000 copies of this book have been circulated in fourteen different languages. Moreover, Professor Aranda’s publication incorporates special indices of people, institutions and publications in addition to a comprehensive bibliography. There are also several pages of color photographs, these include a number of facsimiles of handwritten corrections made by St. Josemaría to his homilies.

Professor Antonio Aranda Lomeña (Córdoba, Spain, 1942) has been Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the University of Navarre for more than twenty years. He is also visiting Professor at the Pontificia Università della Santa Croce (Rome). He was ordained a priest of the Prelature of the Holy Cross and Opus Dei in 1971. He is a mathematics graduate and holds a Ph.D. in Theology. His extensive publications and his teaching activity center around the following research areas: The Blessed Trinity, Christology and Theological Anthropology; Mariology; Theology of Christian Identity and the Theological-Spiritual Thought of St. Josemaría Escrivá.
