El objetivo de este trabajo es realizar una aproximación al contexto histórico, religioso y legislativo, así como a la educación, profesiones y asociaciones femeninas en España, desde los años treinta del siglo xx hasta 1946, es decir, antes de la primera expansión transnacional de las mujeres del Opus Dei. Se pretende explicar el entorno y las dificultades del desarrollo de la sección femenina de esta institución de la Iglesia, que contaba con una treintena de mujeres en 1946. Este estudio, basado en fuentes archivísticas y bibliografía actualizada, servirá de introducción a posteriores investigaciones en curso, sobre los perfiles personales, educativos y profesionales de la sección femenina del Opus Dei.

The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the historical, religious, and legislative context, as well as women’s education, professions, and associations in Spain from the 1930s to 1946—that is, prior to the first transnational expansion of the women of Opus Dei. It seeks to explain the environment and the difficulties involved in the development of the women’s section of this Church institution, which numbered around thirty members in 1946. This study, based on archival sources and an up-to-date bibliography, will serve as an introduction to further ongoing research on the personal, educational, and professional profiles of the women’s section of Opus Dei.
