El Madrid de los años treinta, que vio los primeros pasos del Opus Dei, es escenario de grandes cambios. En primer lugar, de régimen político: la República sustituyó a la Monarquía; también se transformó la ciudad misma como escenario urbano de una nueva época. En ella los intelectuales y la vida cultural, la nueva clase política y la prensa se agitan en un torbellino en el que los madrileños de todos los barrios y clases sociales se sienten protagonistas, a veces a su pesar. La Guerra Civil agudiza, en una ciudad que es a la vez frente y retaguardia, estos problemas.

The city of Madrid of the 1930’s which witnessed the first steps of Opus Dei was the backdrop for great change. Firstly from the political point of view: the Monarchy had been replaced by the Republic; also the city itself was converted into an urban setting for a new era. Intellectuals and cultural life together with the new political class and the Press stirred up a whirlwind which absorbed all of the city dwellers regardless of class or background sometimes in spite of themselves. The Civil War worsened these problems in a city which was at once a battle front and a rear guard.
